2005


PHASE I - Building capacity in the field of Public Health in India:'Oral Healthcare and HIV/AIDS' , an initiative with the dental schools in Maharashtra and Karnataka in India. March 7th to 18th 2005.
- Resource persons: Dr Jeffery Hill, Dept. of Comprehensive Dentistry, University of Alabama School of Dentistry (UAB), Prof S R Prabhu, the School of Dentistry, University of the West Indies (UWI), Trinidad and Tobago.
- Held in two HIGH Prevalence HIV/AIDS states of India, Maharashtra and Karnataka at 4 locations.
- A total of 419 Oral health care providers representing 59 Dental schools, IDA societies, civil hospital dental surgeons and private practicing dentists attended the 2 day workshops.
- We partnered with 4 host Dental schools, UAB, UWI, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate, Air India, Indian Airlines and Government State AIDS CONTROL societies.

Distinguished Lecture Series: Role of Educational Institutions in implementing an HIV/AIDS curriculum- the Caribbean experience,by Hon.Prof. Michael Morrisey, Senior consultant UNESCO, Jamaica, West Indies, on 22nd July 2005. The audience included faculty from Preventive Social Medicine Dept., Deans, Vice Chancellor and key officials from the State Education dept, and other stakeholders working in this field. This Lecture also marked the 1st anniversary of AVNI.

EmOC project: National coordinator for this project. Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) is a project of FOGSI (Federation of Obstetric & Gynecological Society of India) funded by MacArthur Foundation, AMDD and technical support by JHPIEGO. EmOC aims to reduce maternal mortality & morbidity. FOGSI is the largest society of OBGY in our country with about 20,000 members across the country.

Youth Connect Centre a FOGSI project, which is related to adolescent sexual and reproductive health in India. The Foundation is providing technical support.

Leadership in Public Health Practice a 6-month certificate course is under preparation. This will be jointly implemented & recognized by the Maharastra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), UAB-Sparkman center for Global Health and AVNI. MUHS is a government body that controls 200 Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Unani, Ayurveda and Homeopathy colleges.

Teacher as a Counselor a project developed by the Foundation with a focus on Municipal Government schools. We propose to make a difference to about 1800 teachers representing 48 schools.

Certificate course for Dentists in HIV/AIDS: Developing the course in collaboration with Dr Jeffery Hill at UAB, Prof. S R Prabhu at UWI and AVNI.

 

2006


PHASE II - Building capacity in the field of Public Health in India: 'Oral Healthcare and HIV/AIDS' , an initiative with the dental Colleges in GOA, ANDHRA PRADESH and TAMILNADU in India. March 3rd to 12th 2006.
- Resource persons: Dr Jeffery Hill and Prof S R Prabhu.
- Held in two HIGH Prevalence HIV/AIDS states of India, ANDHRA PRADESH and TAMILNADU and 1 Medium HIV/AIDS prevalant State, GOA.
- A total of 320 Oral health care providers representing 21 Dental schools, IDA societies, and private practicing dentists attended the 2 day workshops.
- We partnered with host Dental schools, UAB, UWI, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate, Air India, GOAIR and Government State AIDS CONTROL societies.

Impact of the AIDS epidemic on older people in India, with a focus on the State of Maharashtra a formative research project developed by the Foundation, with technical support by Helpage International. The research will commence in November 2005.

Process Documentation of Growing Up an educational program for Adolescent Girls in India. The program is a joint initiative of FOGSI and Johnson and Johnson. Growing up has covered more than 1 million girls across India in the last five years.

Oral Healthcare providers: Critical role players in the fight gainst HIV/AIDS
Conceptualised, Designed and Printed poster for presentation at the 1st AIDS SOCIETY OF INDIA meeting.

2005/2006

Oral Healthcare and HIV/AIDS a RESOURCE MANUAL developed and published for the Dentists in India for PHASE I and PHASE II . This manual is FIRST of its kind book on the subject, which will serve as a reference manual for the dentists.

Managed Dental workshop : The workshop was held at 7 separate locations in the states on Maharashtra, Karnataka,Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu, India. Participant strength at each location ranged between 75 to 200. Apart for inviting and getting 2 International speakers to come to India and conduct the 2-day workshop, we had additionally organized a battery of 26 eminent national speakers to speak on important topics on both the days. The workshops were very successful both from the content and management point of view. (As reflected in the FEEDBACK DATA compiled from the 700+ participants)

Process documentation of 'Growing Up' a Federation of Obstetric and Gynecology Society of India (FOGSI) and Johnson & Johnson collaborative initiative for young girls in India. The program has been on for the last 5 years and has reached out 1.3 million girls till date

Needs Assessments to find out the Oral health and Nutritional requirements of the mentally challenged person

Formative research to find the impact of HIV/AIDS on the elderly questionnaire design,conducting interviews,analysis of finding and report writing

Leadership in Public health practice preparing modules for teaching

Documentation of 'KISHORI' a FOGSI,UNICEF,NGO-SNEHA,LTMG Medical Hospital(PSM dept.) and ICDS project in an urban slum of Mumbai for adolescent girls

Role of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations in Urban Service Delivery and Urban Governance' by All India Local Self Government a Government of India body at Mumbai, India. Addressed the NGOs and government office bearers on HIV/AIDS treatment'

AIDS- An increasing challenge for cities by All India Local Self Government,Commonwealth Secretariat, London and Educational International. Addressed the NGOs,government office bearers and persons working in the field of Education.

EmoC project launch by FOGSI at Surat, Gujarat, India. Addressed the obstetricians and gynecologists on 'ADVOCACY

International Workshop and CME on Labor management strategies and safe birthing practices in the era of HIV/AIDS by Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram, Wardha, India. Addressed the obstetricians and gynecologists on Birthing practices and Economics of Healthcare.
